As technology advances at an incredible rate Microsoft continues to develop the tools it offers for the Modern Digital Workplace.

The introduction of the Modern SharePoint Experience is, for many, somewhat overdue. The update is geared towards the modern employee and with the launch of the SharePoint Mobile App, Microsoft shows it understands that the future is mobile.

What does the Modern Experience in SharePoint Look Like?

The Modern SharePoint Experience is defined by a set of new user experiences that will improve communication and collaboration and help free up time that you can use to focus more on the strategic side of the business. Instead of having to maintain and patch a SharePoint Server, emphasis can be put on improving and launching new initiatives. Instead of being dependent on your technical team when setting up and running sites, the modern journey enables the self-service culture. The goal is that any user can create a useful, attractive, responsive site without requiring services from IT or a developer.

The Communication Site

The new communication site provides an interactive and engaging way to share information and content of all kinds. The easily configurable template makes it possible to create an inviting space in a matter of seconds.

Right from the start the communication site already includes sections for news, events, documents, and quick links. With the new visually appealing template, you simply need to configure the elements you want to fit exactly the content you find relevant to achieve success from a communications point of view.

Lists and Libraries

List and libraries are more intuitive than ever before. Optimized for each users’ common tasks, files can easily be moved around and pinned to the top for quick access. Users can create and upload folders the same way you do in OneDrive, using the command bar instead of the ribbon. In addition, the list and libraries are also better displayed on mobile browsers to ease the user experience.

The Team Site

The new modern team sites are designed responsively and are much faster to create and navigate from the end user perspective. The design creates a news section right away, making it easy to add information relevant for the team.

One of the biggest differences you’ll notice in the new modern team sites is that Sites are connected to Office 365 groups. Why is that so awesome? Because it makes collaboration ten times easier! Adding members to a group automatically grants them permission to the resources within that group, for example group conversations, calendar, planner, and notes.

Mobile Accessibility

A significant addition to the Modern SharePoint Experience is its ability to go mobile. Taking collaboration with you wherever you go is key in today’s Modern Workplace and Microsoft is eager to jump onboard. With the Microsoft SharePoint Mobile App there is no need for third party apps to quickly access to your team sites, organization portals and resources. It’s even possible to get a view into what your colleagues are working on.

Why make the move to the new & improved SharePoint?

This new and improved SharePoint is all about ease-of-use. Past criticism was that not all aspects of SharePoint, both on the front and backend, were intuitive. Some companies that introduced SharePoint as their end-to-end intranet would get cringes in response when encouraging its use. However, that was then, and this is now. The Modern SharePoint is truly user-friendly, making resistance to adoption a thing of the past and improving the efficiency of users. In addition, it sets up the role of the SharePoint administrator to be more than just IT focused, going beyond technical capabilities enabling admins to be a true end-to-end coach of the platform.

It’s hard to see why you shouldn’t just hop onboard the Modern SharePoint Experience. However, moving away from the Classic to Modern does require a plan. Be sure to learn about the difference between the two approaches, consider your adoption materials and define your strategy before making the move.
